You can use your Opal card to travel on all State Transit and privately operated buses in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter and Illawarra.
How to use your Opal card on a bus
When you start your journey you must tap on at an Opal card reader at the front of the bus. The screen above the Opal card reader and a distinctive ‘OK’ audio tone (1 ding) will confirm that your tap on has been successful.
You cannot enter buses via the rear doors to tap on. You must enter the bus via the front door only.
Before exiting the bus you must tap off with your Opal card at an Opal card reader located at the front or rear doors of the bus. The screen above the Opal card reader and the ‘OK’ audio tone (1 ding) will confirm your tap off has been successful.
The system will automatically calculate the fare for the distance travelled and deduct it from the value stored on your Opal card, and the Opal card reader display screen will show you how much value is left on your card.
You will only be able to tap off when the bus is about to make a scheduled stop or has stopped at it. When the bus is between stops, the reader display will show ‘Please wait’ and you will not be able to tap off.
You must tap on and tap off to avoid incurring a default fare, which may be higher than your normal fare.
