Opal single trip tickets and Opal single bus tickets are single-use tickets for train, ferry, light rail and bus trips within the Opal network. They’re designed as a back-up option, just in case you don’t have an Opal card yet, or you don’t have your Opal card with you.

You must tap on and tap off when travelling with an Opal single trip ticket when you’re travelling on the train, ferry or light rail. If you don’t, you’re not travelling with a valid ticket and you can be fined.

Single trip tickets are available from Opal top up and single trip ticket machines at selected locations in the Opal network. Some machines accept Eftpos, Visa, Mastercard – some accept Eftpos, Visa, Mastercard and cash. Find out about Opal fares.

The Opal single bus ticket is a ticket that you can purchase from the driver on board the bus (except prepaid services). Customers do not need to tap on or tap off.

Adult or Child/Youth only

Opal single trip tickets and Opal single bus tickets are only available as Adult or Child/Youth tickets only. This means if you are eligible for concession travel you need to apply for a Concession or Gold Senior/Pensioner Opal card to access concession fares.

What Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket should a senior, pensioner, tertiary student or other concession customer purchase?

To make it fairer for all customers, concession fares are not available for Opal single trip tickets or Opal single bus tickets as they require proof of eligibility. If you are eligible for concession fares you should apply for the relevant Opal card.

What’s the difference between an Opal single trip ticket and an Opal single bus ticket?

Opal single trip tickets are available for travel on trains, light rail and ferries only. The Opal single trip ticket is a non-reloadable Opal card that customers need to tap on and tap off.

The Opal single bus ticket is a ticket that you can purchase from the driver on board the bus (except prepaid services).

Can I buy an Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket and use it another time?

Opal single trip tickets are only valid on the day of purchase (and the next day until 4am). If you’re planning a trip in future you’re better off getting an Opal card.

Opal single bus tickets are only valid on the bus they are purchased on and are no longer valid when you leave the bus.

Do I have to tap on and tap off with an Opal single trip ticket?

Yes, you must tap on and tap off when using an Opal single trip ticket. If you don’t tap on and tap off you may be fined for fare evasion.

Do I have to tap on and tap off with an Opal single bus ticket?

The Opal single bus ticket is a ticket purchased on board the bus. You don’t need to tap on or tap off.

What if I change my mind after purchasing an Opal single trip ticket about where I want to go?

After you’ve purchased an Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket you can’t change your destination or get a refund unless the ticket is faulty. You can get off early on route to your destination. If you do you will need another ticket to continue your journey.

Can I interrupt my trip?

An Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket is a non-refundable Opal ticket that can only be used for a single trip on a single mode of transport.

If you interrupt your trip you’ll need to purchase another Opal single trip ticket (or get an Opal card) for further travel.

Can I buy a return single trip ticket?

No, Opal single trip tickets and Opal single bus tickets are for single trips only. If you need to make multiple trips to complete your journey you will need to buy an Opal single trip ticket or Opal single bus ticket for each trip, or get an Opal card.

Can I buy more than one Opal single trip ticket during one transaction?

Customers can buy up to two Adult and two Child/Youth Opal single trip tickets in a single transaction, however, the tickets will expire at 4am the following day.

Can I get a refund?

You can only apply for a refund if your single trip ticket is faulty. Refunds are not available for lost, stolen or damaged single trip tickets, or in any other circumstances.

What is the Sydney Airport station access fee?

When purchasing an Opal single trip ticket to the Sydney Domestic or International Airport stations, a station access fee of $13.80 will be added for Adult fares and $12.40 for Child/Youth fares to the cost of the trip.
