Frequently Asked Questions for trainees and apprentices

1 Who can apply for a Concession Opal card for apprentices and trainees?

The Concession Opal card is available to apprentices and new entrant trainees currently registered with Training Services NSW and in an active apprenticeship or traineeship approved by them.

2 I'm an eligible apprentice/trainee, how do I apply for a Concession Opal card?

First you need to apply for a Transport Concession Entitlement Card. You'll need your TCID number – it’s included on letters you’ll have received from Training Services NSW. Once you have applied for your Transport Concession Entitlement Card you can apply for your Concession Opal card online or by calling 13 67 25 (13 OPAL). To save time, you can apply for an Opal card straight after you have applied for your Transport Concession Entitlement Card (the two cards will be sent separately), but you can’t travel on a concession fare until you have received both cards.

8 If I’m no longer eligible what happens to my Concession Opal card?

If you’re no longer eligible, we notify you that your Concession Opal card will stop working in two weeks. The two week notice period gives you time to get an Adult Opal card and transfer your balance to the new card. If you haven’t elected to receive notifications and have not shared your email address or mobile number with us, we can’t notify you. So your Concession Opal card will simply stop working after the two week notice period.

9 Can I use my Concession Opal card as a proof of concession for travel outside the Opal network?

No, a Concession Opal card isn’t a proof of concession entitlement. Apprentices and trainees need to show their Transport Concession Entitlement Card.

Yes, the Concession Opal card has a Daily Travel Cap of $7.50 Monday to Saturday and $2.50 on Sunday, plus a Weekly Travel Cap of $30.
