1 Who can apply for a Concession Opal card for apprentices and trainees?

The Concession Opal card for apprentices and trainees is available to: 1st, 2nd or 3rd year apprentices/trainee apprentices or new entrant trainees currently registered with State Training Services.

The Concession Opal card is not available to 4th year apprentices or to trainees classified as 'existing workers'.

2 I'm an eligible apprentice/trainee, how do I apply for a Concession Opal card?

First you need to apply for an Indentured Apprentice/Trainee NSW Transport concession card. You'll need your TCID number – it’s included on letters from State Training Services. Once you have received your Indentured Apprentice/Trainee NSW Transport Concession Card you can apply for your Concession Opal card online or by calling 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).

 

3 I'm an eligible apprentice/trainee, when am I entitled to use my Concession Opal card?

You're entitled to use your Concession Opal card anywhere in the Opal network, at any time, for as long as you remain in a traineeship/apprenticeship agreement with State Training Services.

4 As an eligible apprentice/trainee, how long am I entitled to use my Concession Opal card?

As an eligible apprentice you're entitled to use a Concession Opal card for the first three years of the apprenticeship. As an eligible trainee you're entitled to the Concession Opal card as long as you remain in a traineeship. 

5 Can I get a Concession Opal card from an Opal retailer?

No, you need to apply online or by calling 13 67 25 (13 OPAL) so we can confirm your eligibility for the concession.

6 Can I apply for a Concession Opal card using a smart phone?

No. You won’t be able to conduct the transaction over the Opal mobile site. For online applications, please use a desktop computer.

7 If I’m no longer eligible what happens to my Concession Opal card?

If you’re no longer eligible, we notify you that your Concession Opal card will stop working in two weeks. The two week notice period lets you get another Opal card (e.g. Adult) and transfer your balance to the new card. If you haven’t elected to receive notifications and not shared your email address or mobile number with us, we can’t notify you. So your Concession Opal card will simply stop working after the two week notice period.

8 Can I use my Concession Opal card as a proof of concession for travel outside the Opal network?

No, a Concession Opal card isn’t a proof of concession entitlement. Apprentices and trainees need to show their Indentured Apprentice/Trainee NSW Transport Concession Card.

9 Can I switch to auto top up after I get my card?

Yes, you can switch to auto top up at any time by simply logging into your account and following the prompts. Alternatively, call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).

10 What is the minimum auto top up amount?

The minimum auto top up for Concession Opal cards is $20, which is half the Adult Opal card amount.

11 Are there daily or weekly travel caps for Concession Opal cards?

Yes, the Concession Opal card has a Daily Travel Cap of $7.50 Monday to Saturday and $2.50 on Sunday, plus a Weekly Travel Cap of $30.

12 Does a Concession Opal card need to have a minimum balance in order to use it?

Yes, you need a minimum amount on your Concession Opal card to tap on. For trains it's $1.18 off peak and $1.69 peak; for ferries $2.87; and for the Stockton Ferry, buses and light rail $1.05. To ensure you can travel, keep your Opal card topped up, or set up auto top up.

13 Will transport staff be able to check my Opal card?

Yes, Revenue Protection Officers and NSW Police Officers can check your journey information at any time using a portable Opal card reader. To prove your entitlement to travel with the Concession Opal card you may also be asked to show your Indentured Apprentice/Trainee NSW Transport Concession Card.

14 I want a Concession Opal card but don’t want to provide any of my details. Can I get a Concession Opal card?

No, proof of entitlement is always required to ensure those receiving the Concession Opal card are eligible. You can use an Adult Opal card or Adult Opal single trip ticket if you do not wish to provide your details.

15 What should I do if I lose my Concession Opal card?

If you lose your Opal card contact Opal on 13 67 25 (13 OPAL), so we can cancel your old card and transfer any value onto a replacement card. The replacement Concession Opal card will take around five to seven working days to arrive. During this time you can travel using an Adult Opal card or Adult Opal single trip ticket. 

16 If my Concession Opal card has been blocked because I'm no longer eligible, can I get a refund or transfer the balance to another Opal card?

If your Concession Opal card has been blocked it means your two week notification period has elapsed. To get a refund you must apply within 90 days, as per the Opal Refund and Transfer Policy. Simply complete and return a refund form available here or call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).

17 Can I return my Concession Opal card and get a refund of any value left on it?

Yes, if you no longer wish to travel using your Concession Opal card, if your card is registered you can get a refund for your remaining Opal balance. Simply complete and return a refund form available here or call 13 67 25 (13 OPAL).
