Opal for group travel

If you’re travelling in a group on public transport within Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Hunter or Illawarra transport network, you need a valid Opal card. Find out which Opal card is right for you. You can get an Opal card online or at an Opal retailer.

Ordering Opal cards online

You can register multiple Opal cards and link them to a single Opal profile.

Registering your cards will enable you to top up and manage your Opal cards online. Your card balances would also be secured in case these cards are lost. Simply use a credit card and link it to your Opal account. Find out more about registering an Opal card.

Payment options

Adult and Child/Youth Opal cards can be obtained online or over the counter at any of our Opal retailers, Transport Customer Service Centres and selected Service NSW centres.

Online payment is by Visa or MasterCard, with most retailers also accepting cash payments. Payments by cheque or additional discounts for groups are not available when travelling on the Opal network.

There are thousands of Opal retailers who can help with acquiring Opal cards and adding value to them. Find your nearest retailer.

Contact an Opal retailer at least three weeks in advance to make sure they are able to supply the quantity of Opal cards you need. The retailer will also add value to the cards starting from as low as $5 for a child or $10 for an adult.

School excursions

Schools planning excursions on public transport need to ensure students and accompanying adults have a valid Opal card to travel.

Schools are encouraged to ask parents to provide their child with their own Child/Youth Opal card prior to school excursions with sufficient funds added.

Planning for tour groups

If individuals travelling in a tour group do not have their own Opal card, tour operators will need to get either Adult Opal cards or Child/Youth Opal cards for customers aged four to 15 years old (inclusive).

Chartering a bus

You can charter a bus for a school or corporate group, for film shoots or private charters. Your application will be reviewed according to bus availability, and your proposed use. Buses are usually only available outside of peak service times from 9.30am–2:30pm, and after 6pm.

For inner Sydney charters, visit Sydney Buses bus charters.

For all other charters, or to organise group travel, contact the nearest bus operator.
