Opal in Newcastle

The only ticket you need for public transport in Newcastle and its surrounds.

The Opal card is the convenient way of travelling on public transport in Newcastle.

You only need to get an Opal card once - you can then add value to it and use it for travel day after day. 

You can use your Opal card on the following services:

Opal retailers in Newcastle

You can pick up an unregistered Opal card from one of 2,100 Opal retailers across the Opal network area, including many in Newcastle.

You can also top up your Opal card with cash, or a debit/credit card* with the following values:

Newcastle Fare Free Zone

STA buses operate a Fare Free Bus Zone in the city centre of Newcastle between 7.30am and 6.00pm seven days per week.

The Fare Free Zone extends from Selma Street in the west, north to the Tree of Knowledge corner (Hannell Street Wickham) and east to the beaches along King Street, before it loops south into Darby Street, along Bull Street and then back to King Street.

Normal fares apply outside the specified hours and/or beyond the Fare Free Zone.

What does this mean for Opal Customers?

Customers must tap on and tap off at the Opal card readers located on STA Newcastle Buses when travelling in and out of the Fare Free Zone.

Travelling within the Fare Free Zone

Opal Customers travelling within the boundaries of the Fare Free Zone are not required to tap on and tap off.

Travel that commences in the Fare Free Zone

Opal Customers who start travelling in the Fare Free Zone and complete their journey outside the zone are required to tap on at the start of their journey and tap off at the end of their journey.

Travel that commences outside of the Fare Free Zone

Opal Customers start travelling outside the Fare Free Zone and complete their journey within the Fare Free Zone are required to tap on at the start of their journey and tap off at the end of their journey.

Opal on Newcastle buses

You can use your Opal card on the following bus routes in Newcastle.

State Transit – Newcastle

Bus routes: 100, 104, 106, 107, 111, 118, 201, 222, 224-226, 230, 231, 235, 310, 313, 317, 318, 320, 322, 334, 339, 349, 350, 352 and 363.

Opal on Route 110 ­– Hamilton to Newcastle rail replacement service

You need an Opal card or Opal single trip ticket to travel on Route 110 rail replacement service. This is a prepaid service. You can get an Adult or Child/Youth Opal card from an Opal retailer. Opal single trip tickets are available from machines across the rail network (including one at Hamilton).

Opal and the Stockton Ferry

You need an Opal card or Opal single ticket to travel on the Stockton Ferry. You can get an Adult or Child/Youth Opal card from an Opal retailer. Opal single tickets are only available for Adult and Child/Youth fares and can be purchased on board from ferry staff (cash only).
