Opal Card

Opal-only gates are rolling out

Opal-only gates are available, as part of a customer trial, at the following locations:

Most of the gates operating at these stations will still be combined paper ticket and Opal gates.

What are the differences between the Opal-only gates and other gates?

Why are the Opal-only gates being installed?

Opal-only gates will be gradually introduced to improve the customer experience with public transport in NSW.

How do I use the Opal-only gates?

You use them in the same way as other gates. Just tap on or tap off by placing your Opal card over the Opal reader, listen for the ‘ding’ and check the display to confirm you’ve tapped on or off.

Are the display screens similar to other gates?

Yes, they are very similar, except Opal only gates have a larger display screen.  The screen will indicate whether the gate is open or closed with a green arrow and the words ‘Opal cards only’ if it’s open, or a red cross if it’s closed.

The screens will display the same information as on other gates.

Is there a wide gate for people with a pram, a wheelchair or luggage?

Yes, these Opal only wider gates are used in exactly the same way as other wide gates.

How will I recognise which gates are Opal-only?

Opal-only gates are clearly marked ‘Opal only’, on the actual gates, and on display screens.

Can a small child and a parent go through an Opal-only gate together?

We recommend using the wide gate, just as with other gates.

Children who are 4 years or older require an Opal card or ticket to travel. If they have an Opal card they need to tap on or off  and go through the wide gate on their own.

If I’m travelling on my Opal card with a child who has a paper ticket, can we both use the Opal only gate?

If one of you has a paper ticket you should both use the other gates which work with both Opal cards and paper tickets.
